Old Walter Reed Hospital

Old Walter Reed Hospital
Originally uploaded by tiz_herself
As you may know, our museum is on the campus of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC. I bought myself a spiffy new camera last fall and have been a picture-taking fool since then. This picture is of the original hospital, opened in 1909. Stately, isn't it? It was replaced with a, um, not-as-nice-looking building in the 1970s and this one's now used for administrative offices.

I hope you are going to continue this blog. My mother was a patient in Walter Reed on and off from 1955 until her death there on August 20, 1958. I would love to see some old photos of the hospital back then. She was on Ward 26, Room 5.
I have searched and searched for pictures, but all I find are of the newer hospital. Thanks for the blog.
Possibly records are kept in the museum. Her name was Ruby W. Hall.
Thanks.

Dear Ms. Bunting - we'll continue the blog for the foreseeable future, but check out our Flickr site - linked to on the right of this column - for pictures of the hospital in the 1950s. We'll see what we can find for you in the photos we've compiled for the Walter Reed 100-year book.

We don't have records of patients of the hospital, and I doubt that any of them still exist as they aren't considered a permanent record by the National Archives.

Thank you so much for your response and I certainly will appreciate you remembering me as you go through the complied pictures for the Walter Reed-100 year book. Hope this will be available online to those of us very interested in this great landmark. Thanks for your work and I wish the very best for all involved. Have a great day.

I think you'll find pictures from the 1950s chapter uploaded to Flickr this weekend. The book itself will be for sale through the Government Printing Office. It has 100s of pictures in it - while we wouldn't mind making them all available on the web, I'm not sure how and where we would do that.

Thank you so much for your useful information. I went to the Government Printing Office site and it appeared to have the book availble, but I got nothing when I clicked on the link to purchase. I definitely want to buy this book so maybe in a near future post you can let me know how this can be done. Please thank Kathleen for uploading some of the 50's pictures. I along with so many appreciate your efforts and all those involved. Thanks and please let me know how to purchase the book. Have a good night.

The book definitely isn't out yet - in fact, I'm not sure if it's been turned in for printing yet. It should be available in late April, early May.
